Karen Coyne
Karen Coyne is a former Fortune 200 chief sustainability officer, board member, non-profit leader, and mentor with deep functional and operational experience in corporate sustainability and enterprise risk management across global regulated industries. Uniquely positioned at the intersection of enterprise risk management and environment, social, and governance disciplines, Karen has been a catalyst for value creation spanning life sciences, climate-tech, manufacturing, and professional services sectors. Karen currently serves as President of WomenExecs on Boards (WEoB), a non-profit organization of 400 women from 32 countries, affiliated with Harvard Business School's corporate governance programs. Prior to WEoB, Karen spent nearly 8 years in global leadership roles at Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS), pioneering the company’s first chief sustainability officer role. She built a new global sustainability function, ultimately transforming it into a value creation function at Group level, integrating both business and sustainability objectives. Prior to Novartis, Karen was a strategic advisor at the International Center for Enterprise Preparedness at New York University, a global public-private sector partnership. Karen entered the startup space as vice president and board member of Coveris, Inc., an auditing and verification services provider. She began her career working at AECOM (NYSE: ACM), the infrastructure and engineering firm, providing management consulting and auditing services to global multinationals. A frequent speaker on governance and sustainability, Karen mentors rising chief sustainability officers and contributes to Boston-area graduate business school programs. She earned an early ‘green MBA’ (a hybrid M.S. in natural and environmental resources - resource administration and management), from the University of New Hampshire, and a B.S. in marine fisheries biology from the University of Massachusetts. She holds the Competent Boards Sustainability ESG Designation (GCB.D), the Competent Boards Climate & Biodiversity Designation (CCB.D), and is a Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA®). She lives in the Greater Boston area.
