Timberland Urban Greening Event at Green Living Science & Lincoln Street Art Park

To experience how urban greening makes a difference, Timberland and Green Living Science (GLS), a local nonprofit that aims to transform Detroit by teaching about waste and recycling, invite you to volunteer for a service event on Monday, June 3 from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm. Be one of 60 volunteers who will give back to Detroit and enhance the Lincoln Street Art Park, GLS’s outdoor community learning space. The park boasts a 40’ recycled shipping container/classroom which serves as a classroom for school groups (pre-K to high school) and educates kids about recycling and environmental responsibility through hands-on experiences.

All attendees of the 2019 Sustainable Brands Conference – SB’19 Detroit – are invited to attend this exclusive hands-on conference experience that showcases Natural Climate Solutions. Since we will be using shovels and other tools, please dress appropriately with closed toe shoes. Water and snacks will be provided.

Tour Inside An Urban Honeybee Hive

Join Bees in the D by suiting up and exploring active Honeybee hives located on the green roof at GM’s Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center or the Cobo Center. You will get a first-hand look at the industrial nature of Honeybees and learn about how Detroit is becoming a leader of urban beekeeping.

Screening of “The Forever Chemicals” by Great Lakes Now

“PFAS” is short for per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances – a family of chemicals used to make common household products and waterproof clothing. They’re being found in an increasing number of drinking water sources, and research is only beginning to determine the health effects and what treatments there might be. Deep Roots Detroit Sustainability Tour and Tasting, Sponsored by American Forests and DTE Energy Foundation

Join American Forests and DTE Energy Foundation as we tour some of Detroit’s most innovative green spaces. Be a part of a tree nursery groundbreaking on former vacant land at Herman Kiefer Health Complex and learn about this important community resource. Next, visit El Moore Lodge, a sustainably rehabilitated apartment building, and El Moore Gardens, a new neighborhood greenspace that connects the local community more deeply to nature. Lastly, stop by Detroit Vineyards, an urban winery in the heart of the city, for hors d’oeuvres and a wine tasting. Thanks to The Detroit Bus Company, a group on a mission to provide free rides to Detroiters in need of safe transportation, we’ll be cruising in a biodiesel bus, hand-painted by local artists.

Screening of “Flint: The Poisoning of an American City”

Please join The WaterRising Instiute, Presbyterian Disaster Assitance, Sabotage and Barnhart Films, Flint Community Developement Center, We The People of Detroit and The Charles H. Wright Museum African American History during the Sustainable Brands conference for the private “work in progress” screening of Flint: The Poisoning of an American City on the evening of Tuesday, June 4th.
This gripping film, shown at “work in progress screenings” during The Sundance Film Festival is a compelling look at drinking water and the democracy issues in Flint. It highlights the urgent need to solve the National water crisis that is unfolding in many cities and serves as a warning for the rest of the country.
After the screening there will be a high level interactive panel conversation on the National Water Crisis, national leaders will be part of this important dialogue wtih infrastructure, water affordability, water security and how we drive innovation with public policy water partnerships.
