William McDonough William McDonough is an architect, designer and a globally recognized leader in sustainable development. From 2014 – 2016, he was the inaugural chair of the World Economic Forum’s Meta-Council on the Circular Economy. In 2017, McDonough was the recipient of the Fortune Award for Circular Economy Leadership. Currently, he serves on the Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security. For more than 40 years, McDonough has defined the principles of the sustainability movement through McDonough Innovation, William McDonough + Partners, Architects, and MBDC. His Values to Value approach points the way toward “more good, rather than less bad”—showing how a positive future of continuous improvement is possible now.
In 2009, he co-founded the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute to scale up the rigorous Cradle to Cradle product certification program. McDonough became the subject of Stanford University Libraries’ first Living Archive in 2012. As an architect, McDonough’s interests and influence range widely. He is the architect of many of the recognized flagships of sustainable design, including the Ford Rouge living roof and truck plant in Dearborn, Michigan and NASA’s “space station on Earth,” Sustainability Base. Most recently, McDonough shared a New Language for Carbon, which illustrates of a values-based terminology that recognizes carbon as an asset, rather than a toxin, and the life-giving carbon cycle as a model for human designs.
