Technological solutions to reduce food waste–at retail and in the home
Concerns around food waste have become more prevalent than ever in both the household and within retail settings. Technological solutions have the potential to both increase food waste reduction and tackle the larger effort to create a more sustainable global food system, while still enabling revenue growth and and protecting margins.
This workshop will highlight some of the primary causes of household and food retail waste, as well as explore how food retailers can leverage technology to help consumers reduce waste. The smart use of information technologies throughout the food supply chain have greatly advanced and spurred the adoption of common standards, supply-chain transparency, and real-time information-sharing practices. Initiatives such as integrated POS systems with relevant sell-out data, dynamic markdowns on shelf labels, and an emphasis on real-time information are just a few ways food retailers can leverage food-waste management solutions.
