Reclaiming sustainability: Beyond the whitewashed narrative
For generations, communities of color have practiced sustainability through land stewardship, collective care, and resource sharing—yet those traditions were often overlooked or appropriated until they became marketable. This conversation will explore how we can reframe sustainability to honor its diverse roots, recognize cultural wisdom, and co-create a future grounded in equity and belonging. Participants are encouraged to reflect on questions such as: When you hear the word sustainability, whose images or voices come to mind—and whose are missing? How might colonization, capitalism, and commodification have shaped our understanding of what counts as “sustainable”? What would it look like for sustainability spaces to fully reflect the diversity of those who have always practiced it?
