Trashy behavior: Engaging consumers in waste sorting and diversion at scale

Consumer participation in reducing waste is imperative, particularly in large public venues and arena settings where single-use food wrapping and disposable packaging is common. This session will address the critical need for preventing cross-contamination in consumer disposal settings to support materials re-use and circularity, and why it's imperative that consumers are set up for success and convenience at the point of sorting and disposal. Speakers will share how venues, brands, event producers, and property managers can support waste reduction using technology, education and even fun to drive behavior change and ensure that waste is diverted from landfill.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the importance of consumer participation in sorting waste is critical to successful downstream materials recycling and circular re-use
  • Learn how technology can support consumer understanding of waste materials and teach sustainable behaviors
  • Hear how large public venues such as arenas can implement zero waste strategies that work at scale and make attendees and fans part of the process
