Case studies on cutting-edge features of forward-looking resilient communities
This panel will shed light on some of the most critical features of building forward-looking resilient communities, covering highly effective solutions by Babcock Ranch, BioStar Renewables and Epic Cleantec.
Babcock Ranch is America’s first solar-powered town, one of the country’s largest solar-plus-battery systems, and as of this moment the only American town proven to withstand the impacts of a category 4 hurricane. Its remarkable performance during Hurricane Ian (circa Sept 2022) established it as an international model for resilient design, preparedness, and construction.
BioStar Renewables provides financing, turnkey engineering, procurement, construction and asset management of renewable energy assets.
Born out of work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, Epic Cleantec has become a leader in the onsite water reuse space. Its work shifts the water industry toward a distributed, circular approach in which wastewater resources — water, nutrients, energy, carbon — are recovered and reused.

The current state of the insurance industry and how to influence it toward better outcomes
This talk will outline important climate-related dynamics around the insurance industry and explain the potentially dangerous consequences of some concerning patterns we’re currently observing. Further, Premiums for the Planet will show how brands can wield the collective power of their insurance spend and their brand influence to motivate insurance carriers to adopt more sustainable practices, significantly accelerating the transition to a more resilient economy. At the same time, we will consider the opportunity for insurance and finance to be part of the solution in scaling effective climate action.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand what to watch out for in the context of the insurance industry’s relationship with polycrisis resilience
- Learn how to take steps to motivate insurance carriers to avoid excessively risky and/or unsustainable behavior
- Dig into the mechanics of how seemingly small financial shifts — when mission-focused and combined with collective action — can influence entire industries toward sustainable and resilient outcomes
