Peter Werts
Peter Werts serves as the Department Director for the Institute of North America’s specialty crops program and is the lead crop consultant working with apple farmers in the upper Midwest on implementation of ecologically intensive IPM programs. Peter also directs a team responsible for working with farmers and food companies to develop meaningful ways to track, measure and reduce pesticide impacts in their supply chain. The Institute’s work has been integral to helping food companies such as Campbell’s, B&G Foods, Inc., Kroger and Honeybear Brands, develop measurable and meaningful ways to tackle challenging issues around pesticides used on food crops and other sustainability metrics such as packing, food loss and waste, and pollinator conservation, in the agricultural sector. The IPM Institute has several sustainability certifications that Peter oversees including the Red Tomato Eco Certified program and the IPM Institute’s Sustainability Standard.
