Katie Excoffier is the Sustainability manager at Genentech in South San Francisco, a campus of 60 buildings and 12,000 employees. She has a BA in Biology from UCSD, an MS in Genetics from UC Berkeley, and an MBA in Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School. Katie leads Genentech’s sustainability council, coordinating strategy around energy, water, waste, transportation, wellbeing, and Green BioPharma. She is involved in two recent initiatives of the Northern California chapter of the USGBC: the Best Buildings Challenge, and the Building Health Initiative. Katie recently earned her LEED GA accreditation.
Katie also leads “Green Genes”, the employee volunteer green team with over 4000 members. Green Genes provides a forum to share sustainability ideas to improve the environmental performance of Genentech’s operations, the local community, and employees’ homes. Green Genes members can choose to engage in a variety of ways: attending monthly lunch & learns and environmental movie nights, volunteering to clean up local beaches, participating in online discussions, taking extra training to become a “GreenGuide” in their department, or becoming a Green Genes team leader to partner with the Sustainability Council and bring the voice of employees to the council’s steering committees.
