Whole Systems Mapping: Driving Innovation & Sustainability Through Prioritized Ideation on Value Chain Maps

This workshop will equip attendees with skills to improve sustainability while simultaneously innovating their product design. Attendees will learn how to focus ideation to be more thorough and more radical by mapping the whole system of a given product or service, then combining that map with LCA or other quantitative sustainability scorecard results. Hands-on exercises will guide attendees through the four stages of the Whole Systems Mapping design method: 1) Visually mapping the product’s whole system. 2) Setting design priorities based on LCA or other quantitative scorecard. 3) Brainstorming more thoroughly by replacing all relevant nodes on the system map, and brainstorming more radically by eliminating nodes on the system map. 4) Choosing winning ideas based on stage 2’s design priorities, as well as critical insights that emerge during the process.
