About Joana Moreira-Silva
Graduated by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (with a grade of 15/20), University of Porto, and got her PhD in Aquatic Sciences in 2009 by the same Institute, under the supervision of Professor João Coimbra and co-supervision of Doctor Jonathan Wilson. The PhD was carried out in collaboration with different institutions, being a visiting researcher in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong (2005); Department of Biology, University of Waterloo (2006); Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen (2007). The work consisted in studies of fish ecophysiology, in particular in the study of the loach tolerance to high ammonia levels and to air exposure.
From 2010 to 2016, was a post-doctoral researcher in the Marine Inspired Biomaterials research area of the 3B’s Research Group, on the valorisation of resources and sub-products of marine origin for the development of systems for biomedical application, namely biomaterials and bioactive compounds, as morphogenetic proteins. During this route, she had the opportunity to be trained in different valorisation approaches from compound extraction – polymers, ceramics bioactive compounds – using different methodologies and working in different scales of the process.
Presently, is a Science and Innovation Officer at CIIMAR.
